Having cut out filters for some time I find the precut filters most convenient and simple to install. Plus the package size enables purchasing an entire year's filters at one time and in a single package. Also, purchasing these filters in addition to the combo pack allows more frequent changes to take advantage of the charcoal for better continuous odor control.
